Ex-local authority homes for sale

Birmingham
Crescent Tower, Birmingham. This fifth-floor flat sits bang in the city centre and offers “superb” views over the city. On the market for £99,950, it includes a new kitchen and bathroom, a double bedroom and a 16ft lounge. It could be attractive for a first-time buyer as it’s below the stamp duty threshold, but as it’s a high-rise it will be hard to get a mortgage on. Odds on it will be snapped up by an investor and quickly made available to let.

St James Lane
St James Lane, north London. From the outside it looks like a small, brick council flat. Inside it has a “beautifully presented reception room”, two bedrooms and a spanking new kitchen. It’s on the market for £250,000 - still the right side of the 3% stamp duty boundary - and sits in Muswell Hill, home to Edwardian terraces, fancy restaurants, leafy streets and yummy mummies.

This family house in West Sussex has three bedrooms and a conservatory leading into a150ft garden. It’s also within easy reach of local schools and the centre of the village. It’s on the market for a non-too-princely £279,950.

Putney
Newnes Path, south London. This three-bedroom split-level flat in Newnes Path is close to the centre of Putney and boasts more than 1,000 sq ft of living space, including a good size kitchen/breakfast room, bathroom, shower room and private rear garden. It’s priced at £385,000 - around £100,000 less than surrounding similar, non ex-authority flats.

Russia Dock
Russia Dock, east London. There is no ex-local authority stigma about this £475,000 three-bedroom house in Surrey Quays, London. The glossy sales blurb ticks all the estate agent boxes, describing it as “well proportioned with off-street parking, laminate flooring and a large kitchen/breakfast room”. It’s also less than a mile to a tube station and high street shopping.

Chelsea
Denyer Street, south London. Ex-local authority flats crop up everywhere and allow buyers to live in their dream area for a lot less money. This top-floor flat is in the heart of Chelsea, has an asking price of £415,000, and offers a roof terrace, french doors and parquet flooring. It also has a relatively low service charge of £500 a year - another benefit of buying ex-authority. A similar sized two-bedroom flat in this area usually goes for £700,000.
