Ex-Liverpool striker Daniel Sturridge handed USA lifeline to resurrect career

After a year out of football, ex-Liverpool striker Daniel Sturridge is being offered the chance to resurrect his career in the USA, according to a report.

The former England international, netted 67 goals in 160 games for the Reds between 2013-19, including 24 in the 2013/14 season.

However, after departing Anfield following the 2019 Champions League success when his contract expired, Sturridge’s switch to Trabzonspor was shortlived.

The Birmingham-born player struck seven times in 16 outings for the Turkish club but was released with his contract mutually terminated on March 2 last year.

On the same day, Sturridge was handed a four-month worldwide ban for breaching betting rules.

Now, the Mirror claims that Major League Soccer pair DC United and Inter Miami are battling it out for the 31-year-old’s signature with both clubs having contacted his representatives.

Based in the US capital, DC United were one of the powerhouses during the early years of MLS, winning four titles between 1996-2004, but despite their high-profile capture of Wayne Rooney in 2018, they have struggled in recent years.

Part-owned by David Beckham, Inter Miami, who completed their inaugural season in 2020, have also been looking to the UK for talent.

Coached by former Manchester United and Everton player Phil Neville, they have already recruited Stoke City stalwart Ryan Shawcross while West Bromwich Albion’s Kieran Gibbs will join them when his contract with the Premier League strugglers expires this summer.
