Ex-Liverpool player thinks Everton and Manchester United favourite Wayne Rooney would be good fit for Reds

Former Everton star Wayne Rooney has been strongly linked with a return to England, and one ex-Liverpool player thinks the forward would have been a good fit...for the Reds.

The DC United captain could reportedly join Championship outfit Derby County in a combined role as player-coach.

And Dean Saunders, who featured 61 times for Liverpool, made the bizarre claim on TalkSport.

When discussing Rooney's potential return the Welshman argued: "I was even thinking, it crossed my mind, if he's fit and he's hungry you know Liverpool need a..."

Host Alan Brazil quickly interjected: "Don't go there, don't go there!"

Saunders continued: "Obviously you can't because you think well is he Wayne Rooney or is he an over the hill Wayne Rooney?

"But that type of player Liverpool probably could do with, a player who can play in midfield and turn defence into attack and hit the splitting passes and score goals."

Following a 13-year spell at Manchester United, Rooney returned to Goodison Park for the 2017/18 campaign, before making the MLS switch.
