Ex-Liverpool midfielder advises Harry Maguire to force a Manchester United transfer

Harry Maguire should force a move from Leicester City to Manchester United this summer in order to take the next step in his career, amid ongoing transfer speculation.

That's the view of former Liverpool midfielder Charlie Adam, who believes the England international should be more active in pursuing an exit from his current club this summer if he wants to become one of the best in the world.

Maguire's stock has risen significantly in the past 12 months following his exploits at the World Cup in Russia last summer, with United and rivals Manchester City both eyeing a move for the 26-year-old.

However, Leicester have adopted a firm stance in their demands for the experienced defender and are seeking fee that would be a world record for a defender, exceeding the £75million Liverpool paid for Virgil van Dijk in January 2017.

Maguire has not handed in a transfer request and has been praised by Foxes boss Brendan Rodgers for being the 'ultimate professional' with how he is dealing with the saga but Adam believes he should look to force a transfer.

“I think he's got to force the move because he is at the next stepping stone in his career where he thinks he is going to develop again,” he told talkSPORT.

“Brendan is a good manager and he will learn a lot from him.

“But playing for Manchester United is totally different, it's one of the biggest clubs in the world and the pressure, the hype of having to win every week.

“It's a great move for him but these are the last resorts – not that you want to do this and he probably doesn't want to do this – but he knows this is the biggest move of his career.

“It's the next five, six, seven years where he feels he is going to develop into a world-class centre-half and he wants to do it.

“Leicester have got the right to play hardball but he has given everything to Leicester and an opportunity like this is very difficult to turn down.”
