Ex-Liverpool goalkeeper Jerzy Dudek hits out at 'deceptive' Lionel Messi

Jerzy Dudek described Lionel Messi as "deceptive" and "provocative" as he reflected on his four seasons at Real Madrid.

The Polish goalkeeper, who has recently written a new autobiography, is best known for being Liverpool's hero in the 2005 Champions League final, helping the Reds win the competition after saving two penalties in the shootout against AC Milan in Istanbul.

After six largely successful years on Merseyside Dudek moved to Madrid in 2007 but made just 15 appearances over four seasons as he played backup to Iker Casillas.

Nevertheless, he saw enough to form a pretty shoddy opinion about Messi and the rest of the Barcelona team, as he explained in his book.

"He was deceptive and provocative, the same as Barcelona and Pep Guardiola," Dudek said.

"They were so ready to provoke you and they were able to do it to perfection. That hurt Jose Mourinho and the whole team a lot.

"I saw Messi say such rude things to Pepe and [Sergio] Ramos that you would not imagine from such a quiet and seemingly good person."

Dudek also had some interesting things to say about former Madrid heroes Cristiano Ronaldo and Raul, adding: " Cristiano Ronaldo is arrogant, but he's a normal guy behind the scenes.

"It's about how people perceive him, more or less. Like Raul, he's egocentric, incredibly competitive and a winner.

"Both would prefer their team to win 2-1 with their goals than 5-0 with other players scoring."

Madrid and Barcelona took part in a number of frenetic El Clasico games while Dudek was at the club, and both their players and staff regularly clashed during the games.

Dudek retired in 2011, and in 2014 took up car racing, completing a full season in the Volkswagen Castrol Cup.
