Ex-Liverpool forward scores extra-time wondergoal from inside his own half

Former Liverpool youngster Glen McAuley scored a wondergoal for Republic of Ireland side Athlone Town in stoppage time in extra time to send the game to penalties.

It turned out to be his first game for the Irish side and he completed his hat-trick too in an eight-goal thriller.

Just a minute earlier, Waterford regained the lead and seemingly put the tie to bed but straight from kick-off the forward was teed up on the edge of his centre-circle and lobbed goalkeeper Paul Martin with 94 minutes on the clock.

His teammates and the commentary team could not believe what they had just witnessed as McAuley's strike sparked wild celebreations.

There were four red cards in the match with both managers being sent to the stands but McAuley's hat-trick was in vein as they were beaten on penalties by the six-time League of Ireland winners.

The 21-year-old spent three years at the Reds and featured alongside the likes of Curtis Jones, Rhian Brewster and Rhys Williams for the Reds U18s, captaining the side on his 18th birthday in 2018.

In his debut season with the youngsters, he scored 15 goals in 21 games including four braces.

He went on to make 46 appearances for the U18s scoring 21 goals whilst playing 17 times for the U23s without finding the back of the net.

The switch to Athlone Town came after he struggled to find game time for Bohemians.
