Former Liverpool man Steve Nicol has criticised Anthony Martial and claimed Marcus Rashford is a better centre-forward.
The Frenchman came under fire from Paul Scholes in recent days, with the former United midfielder claiming Martial 'conned' supporters into thinking the club did not need to sign a striker during the transfer window.
"These forwards are exceptionally talented lads. We all know that," Scholes told Stadium Astro.
"The problem with United’s forwards is that none of them is an actual centre-forward.
"Martial almost conned us into thinking he was one at the end of last season because he scored so many goals and was quite good.
"He’s started this season quite poorly again, which makes you think he isn’t. It’s misleading.
"That’s why I’ve kept saying we need a top-class No. 9."
Martial is yet to score since the beginning of the 2020/21 season and his slow start has drawn criticism from former Liverpool star Nicol too, who agrees with Scholes that he isn't a 'world-class centre-forward'.
“The fact is, you can’t rely on him,” Nicol told ESPN FC.
“When you play for Manchester United, you need people you can rely on.
“When I see him, I don’t think he’s a centre-forward. But let me put it another way, he’s not a world-class centre-forward.
“He’s a centre-forward who can score goals, but not when it counts.
“He’s a bit like Lukaku because he scored loads of goals before him and they got rid of him. I actually think Rashford is a better centre-forward.
“I think they should give him some time at centre-forward, but I think they don’t because he can do a bit defensively, he’ll track back.
“It’s part of the way United are playing now, they’re playing Martial at centre-forward maybe because Rashford can get back and do some defending.
“I think Rashford is a far better centre-forward.”
