Ex-Liverpool defender makes claim on what Philippe Coutinho was like in training

Former Liverpool midfielder Philippe Coutinho was good in training, but he couldn't hold a candle to Daniel Sturridge.

That's according to ex-Reds academy prospect Conor Masterson, who was lucky enough to see the duo in action at Melwood.

Irish centre-back Masterson was Liverpool Under-18 captain when he was invited by then boss Brendan Rodgers to train with the first-team.

Masterson, who has since joined Queens Park Rangers in 2019 after he was released by Liverpool, saw a number of stars up close and was particularly impressed by Sturridge.

"Daniel Sturridge, man! He was just a joke," Masterson told Goal. "He ripped everyone apart. Coutinho was good, but Sturridge was on another level.

"He was so sharp, he had pace, he could finish, he had skill, he could do everything. He stood out a mile to me."

Sturridge was a star player for the Reds during his six years at Anfield, making 71 Premier League appearances and scoring 50 goals.

The Englishman forged a great partnership with Luiz Suarez, and was a part of the Reds team that came close to winning the title in 2014.

Sturridge, who spent the 2018 season on loan at West Brom, left Liverpool in 2019 and joined Trabzonspor in Turkey.
