Former Liverpool and England full-back Glen Johnson believes that Tottenham's current league position won't allow Paulo Gazzaniga the chance to bed in, following the injury to Hugo Lloris.
The Tottenham stopper is expected to deputise for Lloris, who will be out until next year after dislocating his elbow against Brighton at the weekend.
Lloris was given oxygen on the pitch after his mistake allowed Brighton to take the lead at the Amex, but is unlikely to require surgery on his injured elbow.
A statement on the Tottenham website on Monday said: "Hugo Lloris has undergone further assessment this morning after sustaining a dislocated elbow in our match against Brighton on Saturday.
"The findings have shown that although surgery will not be required, our club captain has suffered ligament damage and is not expected to return to training before the end of 2019.
"Hugo is currently in a brace and will now undergo a period of rest and rehabilitation under the supervision of our medical staff at Hotspur Way."
And Johnson, speaking to BETDAQ, believes the injury is a big loss for Spurs and the fact that he is the club's captain makes it even worse.
He said: "Whenever a side loses their goalkeeper it’s a big loss because they are almost like the quarterback for the team.
"A top-quality keeper is so important to a successful team, and the fact that Hugo Lloris is also the Spurs captain makes things that much worse.
"It’s never easy for a back four to lose their goalkeeper because every player has their own way of doing things, so there is going to be an adjustment period while the new keeper gets bedded in and unfortunately for Tottenham, their current league position doesn’t really give them much time for that."
