Ex-Leeds United number nine explains what cost Marcelo Bielsa promotion last season

Former Leeds United striker Jimmy Floyd Hasselbaink has admitted he's unsure whether Marcelo Bielsa's squad is stronger this season than last season.

The ex-Whites frontman, who scored 34 goals in 69 Premier League appearances during his time at Elland Road, has also stated it's games like Derby County at home which cost United promotion last season.

Leeds have taken 16 points from their first seven Championship fixtures this season and sit top of the table heading into matchday eight.

Bielsa's side have one extra point compared to this stage last season, whilst many feel their squad is better equipped for promotion this term after their summer transfer dealing.

However, Hasselbaink is unsure whether United are strong this time around and believes that it's game against teams like the Rams which prevented them from getting to the Premier League last season.

Speaking to Sky Sports as part of their punditry for the Elland Road clash, he said: "They missed Roofe and I think that was a big factor last year, he was a big player.

"They have a little bit more in the wide areas, which is very important for the way they are playing. I still have to see if they are stronger than last year.

"It was a big, big disappointment that they didn't win against Swansea. But, obviously, they still have one more point than they did last year so they are on track.

"It's going to be important for me to see what they do today, these kind of matches. Last year, these kind of matches, they didn't really get the three points in most of them.

"If they can do that, then it's progression for me."
