Ex-Leeds United man's contradictory claim over Swansea City's Daniel James as he makes bold prediction

Former Leeds United striker Noel Whelan reckons there is "no way" Daniel James will sign a new deal with Swansea City.

The future of the Welsh youngster has been the hot topic of conversation for the past few months, following his aborted deadline-day move to Elland Road in January.

Since the beginning of the year James' profile has gone up and up - and with it his price tag - and Swansea are keen to tie the winger down to a new contract in SA1.

Leeds aren't the only side tracking the 21-year-old, with his stellar performances attracting Premier League interest in the shape of Manchester City, Tottenham, Leicester and Bournemouth.

Whelan claims James won't sign fresh terms in Landore but in doing so contradicted himself - saying there may be a situation where he does agree a new deal. He previously labelled Swansea "a disgrace" over the way they handled themselves in January and he reiterated that stance one again.

He told Football Insider: "There is no way he’ll sign a new deal with Swansea.

Celtic keen on Swansea City boss Graham Potter, claim reports in Scotland

"The way they behaved was shocking and disgraceful. I felt really sorry for Dan James after what happened, as they cruelly took away the opportunity for him to play at Leeds.

"You can’t blame Swansea for wanting to tie him down, but the kid is heading for Premier League, and the only way he’ll sign a new contract is if it has a low release clause."

For his part James says he is happy with Graham Potter's side and revealed last week that talks are ongoing.

He said: "For me, it’s just about concentrating on the football.

"There’s a contract situation going on at the minute, but I’m enjoying my football here, in the last few games the way we’ve played has been unbelievable.

“I’ve just got to keep playing and keep enjoying it.

"I’m not really involved in it (negotiations), it’s just between my agent and the club, and that’s something that will come out soon."

Whatever happens this summer, Leeds - or indeed any suitor - will likely have to pay more than the £10million deal that was in place between Swansea and the Whites in January.
