Noel Whelan has backed Steven Gerrard to replace Marcelo Bielsa when he leaves Leeds United.
The Whites boss' current deal runs out at the end of the season with both parties happy to continue with one-year deals.
Gerrard, by contrast, is tied down to Rangers until 2024 and has been linked with succeeding Jurgen Klopp at Liverpool, whose contract also expires at the same time.
Whelan, though, believes Gerrard would be a great appointment for Leeds to replace Bielsa when he eventually leaves the club.
“Absolutely. He brings professionalism, drive and desire to a team," he told Football Insider.
“We have seen that with the remarkably quick turnaround at Rangers since he has been there.
“He has not only recruited the right players but he has installed a belief in that squad. They have that winning mentality that he always had as a player.
“He has also brought a lot of youth into the club. He compliments the older heads with youth, it is a nice happy medium.
“It really does not surprise me that many teams are looking at Steven Gerrard because they know what he brought as a player and they are now finding out what he brings as a manager. It is tempting to a lot of teams.
“Whether he would leave for a Derby, is debatable. With Steven, he might be looking for something in the Premier League and Leeds United fit the bill. That would be tempting.
“But I think he has a job that he wants to finish at Rangers. He will not feel fulfilled until he wins the league or a trophy.
“After that, he might think about moving on and it would not surprise me if lots of teams are looking at Steven and his backroom staff because it is full of quality.”
