Ex-Leeds United duo named in Australia's Team of the Century

Ex-Leeds United stars Harry Kewell and Mark Viduka have been named in the Socceroos' 'Team of the Century' by Football Australia.

Kewell joined Leeds at the age of 15 after undergoing a successful four-week trial along with former Blackburn Rovers midfielder Brett Emerton. The latter was unable to accept the Whites' offer due to visa complications, while Kewell became the second Australian to play for the club when he debuted at 17.

In 1999-2000, Kewell was voted PFA Young Player of the Year and was also named in the PFA Team of the Year. Kewell helped Leeds reach the semi-final of the UEFA Cup and was joined by his Australian compatriot Viduka in the summer of 2000.

Viduka arrived at Elland Road fresh off the back of winning the Scottish Premier League golden boot with an astonishing 25 goals in 28 games for Celtic. The pair would lead the Whites to the UEFA Champions League semi-finals, although Kewell would leave the club for Liverpool under acrimonious circumstances in 2003.

Leeds finished second from bottom in the 2003-04 season and Viduka left following their relegation after scoring 72 goals in 166 appearances across all competitions for the Whites. He continued his rich vein of form for Middlesbrough by netting 42 times in three seasons, before rounding off his career at Newcastle United.

After scoring 63 times in 242 matches for Leeds, Kewell went onto spend five seasons at Anfield. He enjoyed three years with Turkish giants Galatasaray and concluded his career with spells at Melbourne Victory, Al-Gharafa and Melbourne Heart.

A number of former Premier League stars feature in the 23-man squad selected by Football Australia. Mark Schwarzer, who played 514 Premier League games for Middlesbrough (332), Fulham (172), Leicester City (6) and Chelsea (4), and former Brighton and Arsenal goalkeeper Matt Ryan made the squad.

Elsewhere, Lucas Neil, Mile Jedinak, Brett Emerton, Aaron Mooy and former Everton attacker Tim Cahill were also included.
