Ex-Leeds United ace Jimmy Floyd Hasselbaink 'in advanced talks' with FA to become England coach

Former Leeds United Striker Jimmy Floyd Hasselbaink is reportedly 'in advanced talks' with the FA to join Gareth Southgate's England coaching set-up.

Sky Sports' Rob Dorsett reports that Hasselbaink is currently in discussions with the FA regarding a deal that would see him replace the outgoing Chris Powell. The move would allow Powell to focus solely on his role as head of Tottenham Hotspur's academy, seeing the former Leeds man replace him at St George's Park.

Southgate and and Hasselbaink played alongside one another during their time together at Middlesbrough back in the early 2000s and now it seems that the pair are set to unite once again. The timing of his arrival is still to be confirmed, with England looking to prepare for their European Championship qualifying matches later this month.

The Three Lions take on Italy and Ukraine in their first steps towards booking their place in the Euro 2024 tournament in Germany next year. England will be hoping to go one step further than their heartbreak at Wembley in 2021 as they lost to Italy on penalties during the final in the nation's capital.

And this could well prove to be something that Hasselbaink could help the England squad with. The former White scored 20 of his 21 competitive spot-kicks during his playing career.

His only miss will of course be familiar to Leeds supporters as it came during the club's 0-0 draw with Chelsea at Elland Road in the 1998/99 Premier League season.
