Ex-Leeds owner Massimo Cellino blasts Serie A chiefs over post-coronavirus plans

Former Leeds chief Massimo Cellino has criticised Lazio owner Claudio Lotito for comments in which he expressed a desire to re-start the Serie A campaign as soon as possible amid the coronavirus crisis.

Italy has been one of the worst-hit countries in the world by Covid-19, and Cellino's side Brescia are located in Lombardy, one of the hardest hit regions.

Lazio were lying just one point behind league leaders Juventus when the season was suspended, and Lotito recently said the side were "ready and waiting" to play.

But in an interview with Italian outlet Giornale di Brescia Cellino took a swipe at his fellow owner, saying: "I see too much selfishness and too many people trying to take advantage of this situation.

"Lotito wants to get back on the pitch? I listen only to those who deserve to be listened to. I don't even know if Lotito represents Lazio, since he is only president of their board of directors.

"Seriously, let them take a walk around Brescia and see what’s happening here. I don't want any advantages and I'm not afraid of relegation, because I know the club won’t go bankrupt and we'll earn our place back in Serie A."

Cellino also appeared to suggest his team would boycott matches if the league resumes again anytime soon.

He continued: "I reiterate that if there are games again, Brescia will not play.

"This is not a provocation. They can dock points if they want, I take all responsibility."

Brescia are at the bottom of the Serie A table, nine points off safety, and it appeared they were heading for relegation before the suspension of the campaign.

Italy is still in a strict lockdown, and the government recently extended the restrictions until May 3, although many teams are said to be keen to return to training.
