Ex-kabaddi player held for killing wife, other crimes in Delhi's Najafgarh

NEW DELHI: The Special Cell of Delhi Police has arrested a former national kabaddi player-turned-gangster for his alleged involvement in several criminal cases, including the murder of his wife. The accused, Dinesh alias Dhillu (22), is a native of Haryana and was arrested from Najafgarh.

Police said Dhillu was a junior national kabaddi player and represented Haryana in various tournaments. However, during his graduation, he came into contact with gangsters like Kaushal, Monu Lalheri and Naveen Bali and took to crime. “He was planning to eliminate rival gang members in Delhi-NCR on the direction of jailed gangsters,” the officer said.

The accused was wanted in several heinous cases in Haryana and UP, including murder, attempt to murder, and robbery. Deputy commissioner of police (Special Cell) Rajeev Ranjan Singh said that Dhillu murdered his wife in November 2021 and had a reward of Rs 5,000 on his arrest by Haryana Police. “He had stabbed his wife as he was suspicious of her,” the officer said.

In January this year, Dhillu and his associate Satyawan murdered one Rohtash in Khidwali village to avenge the murder of Satyawan’s cousin, whom Rohtash killed. Later in April 2022, he and his associate Kamli Kant and others opened fire at the house of one Sandeep in Jhajjar with the intent to kill him. “Kant had quarrelled with Sandeep on Holi, so he wanted to take revenge. On April 25, Dhillu and associates had robbed an SUV in Shamli (UP),” the officer said.

Police said they received information about Dhillu’s movements in Najafgarh. “A team was formed, and a raid near the drain between Hiran Kudna and Dichaon village in Dwarka led to his arrest,” the officer said. A sophisticated pistol with four live rounds was seized from him.

Another officer said that Dhillu was impressed by the lifestyle of the gangster in his village and he left kabaddi for a life of crime to be like him.
