Ex-Jets QB Josh McCown comes out of retirement, signs with Eagles

After announcing his retirement a couple of months ago, Josh McCown got the itch to come back and play.

McCown has signed a one-year deal with a $2 million base salary, which is fully guaranteed, according to ESPN’s Adam Schefter. The contract could be worth up to $5.4 million in incentives.

The Jets had interest in bringing McCown back this offseason, but he wanted to spend more time with his family. McCown, 40, was planning to be an ESPN analyst this season but still wanted to play and told the network that if the right opportunity came along, he would consider it.

That right opportunity was the Philadelphia Eagles who were in desperate need of a backup quarterback. The Eagles have lost two quarterbacks this preseason to injuries. Cody Kessler suffered a concussion this week, and Nate Sudfeld fractured his left wrist last week.

Philadelphia is the 11th team McCown has signed with. The NFC East plays the AFC East this season, meaning McCown could suit up against his former team twice. He will most likely play in the team’s fourth preseason game, against the Jets at MetLife Stadium, in order to get up to speed. The Jets visit the Eagles on Oct. 6.
