Ex-Jets QB James Morgan joins third NFL team since 2020 draft

James Morgan isn’t even two seasons removed from being a fourth-round draft pick, but the quarterback is already on his third NFL team.

The Steelers signed Morgan, a former Jet, to their practice squad on Monday. He will be Pittsburgh’s third quarterback in practice behind Mason Rudolph and Dwayne Haskins. Ben Roethlisberger is on the reserve/COVID-19 list, hence the Steelers’ need for depth under center.

The Steelers released NT Isaiah Mack to make room for Morgan.

Joe Douglas questionably drafted Morgan out of Florida International in 2020 with the hopes of grooming him into a capable backup. He fought for that job this summer after sitting on the sidelines as a rookie, but Mike White ultimately won the No. 2 spot on the depth chart behind Zach Wilson. As a result, the Jets cut Morgan before the 2021 season, quickly severing ties with the recent mid-round pick.

Morgan signed with the Panthers practice squad, reuniting with Sam Darnold, shortly thereafter. However, the 24-year-old has yet to play in an NFL game.
