Hollyoaks' Andy Newton Lee put in COMA after collapsing at wheel of car

Actor Andy Newton Lee was put in a coma after collapsed at the wheel of his car following a 'punishing schedule'.

The former Hollyoaks, Coronation Street and Casualty actor was found in his car near his home in Los Angeles, and diagnosed with pneumonia once admitted to hospital.

Hull Live reports that 38-year-old actor, who played Robbie Flynn in Hollyoaks, was due to fly back to the UK for the funeral of his friend but missed out after being in a coma for a week.

Andy was induced into a coma last Thursday, before being brought out of it on Wednesday and blamed his illness on "burning the candle at both ends".

He fell asleep in his car as he looked out across the ocean at LA and was found by a passerby, who raised the alarm.

Andy blamed his punishing schedule of recent weeks, in which he flew back and forth to the UK, competed in marathons and pushed himself with a fitness regime.

Speaking to Hull Live, Andy said: "I'd just been sleeping next to the ocean in my car, it's nice, it's like being at the Humber Bridge, my dad used to do it.

"I've been really run down and stressed for a bit with my business. I've had a cold and the flu but I thought I was just run down.

"I've done marathons, going to yoga and the gym, flying back to London every second week and burning the candle at both ends."

Andy paid tribute to the person that found him, saying that he would have died if they hadn't got help.

He continued: "I woke up yesterday morning and felt very erratic but I'm much better today. The care here has been amazing and I feel very lucky.

"It's definitely a wake up call to anyone who has respiratory problems."

The former actor is now facing a recovery that is "as long as a piece of string," but admits that he is "looking forward to getting home."
