Ex Hibs boss John Hughes shares superb 'bodyguard' story as he recalls being stitched-up by old Celtic pal

John Hughes has shared a superb story in which he was royally stitched up by fellow former Hibs boss John Collins during a trip to Monaco.

The pair were in the French Riviera on a warm weather cycling holiday when Collins volunteered to show his ex teammate exactly where the Grand Prix starts.

However after making a short trip to the tourist attraction in one of Collins' Minis, Hughes didn't quite realise he was about the be the but of a quite brilliant joke, and Collins' bodyguard for the day.

Hughes told the Football Daft podcast: “He’s got a place in Monaco – he’s still kept his wee place. He said ‘come on, we’ll go over for a week, we’ll go cycling’.

“So we went down to the garage and he’s got the Union Jack Mini, the British Mini, so he’s showing me about, and he says I’ll show you where the Grand Prix starts.

“When you get up to the top of the square, the big hotel and the casino, all the top motors are there.

“He said ‘when I pull up in the car you just get out and stand next to it, because we’ll not get parked. It’s all concierges and all that’.

“So I get out, stand next to it, he’s up talking to them, shaking hands with them all, cuddling them all. And I saw them all laughing, pointing down, p*****g themselves laughing.

“So he came down, and he’s giving it all the French chat. All I heard was ‘bodyguard’. I turned around and said ‘what? and he said ‘I just told them you’re my bodyguard watching the car’.”

Both men have played for and managed Hibs – with the duo also teammates at Celtic.

Hughes and Collins also spent a brief time together at Livingston, with Collins the director of football and Hughes manager.
