Ex-Hibs and Rangers midfielder Emerson Hyndman confirms positive COVID-19 test

Former Hibernian midfielder Emerson Hyndman tested positive for COVID-19 returning to action, the player has confirmed.

The 24-year-old revealed he contracted the virus while preparing for the MLS is Back tournament with current club Atlanta United in Georgia, however was asymptomatic.

Hyndman, who scored once in 19 appearances for the Easter Road side on loan from Bournemouth in 2018, was one of two Atlanta players to return positive results before the return of the game in the United States earlier this month.

The Texan midfielder played 56 minutes of the side's 1-0 defeat to New York Red Bulls on Tuesday, though admitted he was "playing catch up" after training in isolation away from the rest of the squad.

He told ESPN: "I was asymptomatic the whole time but obviously the testing picked it up, which is credit to all the testing protocols we had to go through. It was obviously frustrating being away from the team and being like that, but it was necessary and I knew that.

"At the training ground it's all very protocol-driven. Mask in, mask out, and not even allowed at the building at the beginning stages of it. I was confident and the whole club was confident that the training ground was a safe place."

Atlanta are one of 24 sides taking part in the end of season tournament in Florida after the season was altered following a suspension amid the coronavirus outbreak.

The Georgia outfit will face FC Cincinatti and Columbus Crew in their other group games before the knockout stage.

Hyndman also spent time on loan at Rangers prior to linking up with Neil Lennon at Hibs.

He joined Atlanta after leaving Bournemouth in 2019 where he is now a teammate of former Hearts winger Jake Mulraney.
