Ex-Hibs and Celtic defender Efe Ambrose set to leave Derby without playing a game

Ex-Hibs and Celtic defender Efe Ambrose is set to leave Derby County without making a first team appearance for the club.

The Nigerian international invoked a clause in his contract that allowed him to leave Easter Road in January with six months left to run on his contract.

Ambrose was offered an improved deal to stay in Edinburgh, but turned it down given the wages on offer from elsewhere.

He penned a short-term deal with Frank Lampard’s side, but hasn’t played since heading to the East Midlands.

The Rams made it to the play-off final at Wembley, but missed out on promotion after losing 2-1 to John McGinn’s Aston Villa, with Ambrose’s former Hibs teammate heading in the winning goal.

Derby have decided against offering Ambrose the opportunity to stay with them as they embark on another season in the Championship.
