Ex-Hear’Say star Suzanne Shaw ‘lost in love’ after becoming grandmother

Former Hear’Say singer Suzanne Shaw and actor Darren Day have become grandparents after their son Corey, 21, welcomed his first child.

Shaw, 44, who had a brief romance with Day in 2005, said she was “lost in pure love” while posing for photos alongside her new grandson, Corey, 21, and Day.

The singer-turned-musical theatre star met Day after starring together in a West End production of Summer Holiday shortly after her stint in Hear’Say, the manufactured group formed on reality series Popstars in 2000.

Day broke up with actor Adele Vellacot to start a relationship with Shaw, and they broke up 18 months later.

Shaw wrote on Instagram: “Something beautiful, something true, My baby boy Corey, became a father, to a precious son, wrapped softly in blue.

“I remember the moment when you arrived, as if it were yesterday, you were so perfect, so full of light, you took my breath away.

“You came into my world, and changed me forever inside, gave my life a deeper meaning, filled my heart with pride.

“And now here you stand, a father so strong, so kind, holding your own little boy, alove like yours, I recognise.”

Shaw was one of five stars who successfully became a part of Hear’Say, alongside Kym Marsh, Myleene Klass, Noel Sullivan and Danny Foster.

Their debut single “Pure and Simple” sold 1.3 million copies to become the fastest-selling non-charity track ever released in the UK at that time, sitting only behind Band Aid’s “Do They Know It’s Christmas” and “Candle in the Wind”, released by Elton John in the wake of Princess Diana’s death.

Hear’Say had a successful year commercially, achieving two No 1 singles, a No 1 album and making several TV appearances. However, their second album, released in time for Christmas, only just made it into the top 15.

Marsh was the first to quit the band, and was replaced by Johnny Shentall – but 10 months later, in October 2002, they announced their split, blaming "abuse from the public".

Shaw soon embarked on a musical theatre career, starring in Summer Holiday, The Rocky Horror Picture Show, Chicago and White Christmas – all for which she received rave reviews.

In 2010, she had a year-long role in ITV soap Emmerdale as Eve Birch, the granddaughter of legendary character Edna Birch (Shirley Stelfox) and, two years later, she won reality competition Dancing on Ice after competing alongside professional skater Matt Evers.

Shaw has remained friends with her Hear’Say co-stars, stating in 2022: "We're always going to have a bond, unlike any bond that I'll have with any other people in my life".

The star has another son – Rafferty, 10 – with ex-fiancé Sam Greenfield, whom she split from earlier this year. She has also been married to DJ Jason King.
