Ex-Glenafton striker can't wait to get started with Rutherglen Glencairn

Kit Cummins can’t wait to get stuck in to the West of Scotland League Premier Division, and intends to score as many goals as he can for Rutherglen Glencairn.

Having missed a year out of the game due to the Covid outbreak, and having left Glenafton on June 19, the 28-year-old admits he has a bit of work to do to hit peak fitness, but is eager to get started, having been impressed by boss Willie Harvey.

Experienced striker Cummins, who has also starred for Neilston and Shotts Bon Accord, is thrilled to be back in the top flight.

He said: “I’m delighted to sign.

“I had taken a wee bit of time out of the game sinc the pandemic and stuff, so it’s good to get the head down and focus on being in the top league again.

“You look at the teams and if it doesn’t get you excited, playing against the likes of Pollok and Auchinleck Talbot, I don’t know what will.

“The structure of the league, with all the teams going down and all the teams going up, it is going to hectic.

“But you look at that as a junior footballer and think ‘I want to get my teeth into that’, and for me it’s more of an opportunity than a hindrance.

“It’s more opportunities for me to score goals and put goals on the tally, so I’m excited.

“It’s amazing, I’m really excited to score some goals in front of the big crowds, and I’ll do my best for the club.”

Cummins says a phone call from Harvey convinced him to join Glencairn and though he refused to admit his targets, he has high hopes for the season.

He said: “Willie phoned me and was keen to get me in to have a wee look about the place, so I trained a couple of weeks ago and just took it from there.

“I liked the look of the club, the gaffer and the vision he has to play this season, so I’m looking forward to having a positive impact.

“We have quite a young group of players, so if we can get some early momentum going, who knows what can happen.

“I’ll set my own targets, but I’ll keep them to myself!

“I know exactly what I want to achieve, how many goals I want to score.

“I’ve been signed to put the ball in the back of the net, and that’s something I’m going to work hard to do.

“We’ll be doing a lot of training, but I think at that level it’s important to be doing work away from training as well.

“I’ll be going to the gym, keeping myself in shape. I’ve been out of the game for a wee while, I need to get my body back into a good condition, get into a good routine, and start putting the ball in the back of the net.”
