Ex-Glasgow Caledonian Uni lecturer dies in Colombia after accident at home

A former lecturer at Glasgow Caledonian University has died following an accident in Colombia.

Sociologist, poet and writer Tim Cloudsley passed away in the city of Bucaramanga in the region of Santander in north-central Colombia, his home for the past 16 years.

According to capital Bogotá's Caracol Radio, his wife Esperanza said that he died as a consequence of a fall at home that happened some months previously that caused a hip injury.

The English-born academic was a Professor in the Department of Sociology at Glasgow Caledonian University for 20 years between 1977 and 1997 before he made the move to Bucaramanga - where he held a post of Professor in the School of Languages at The Industrial University of Santander.

Caracol reports that Mr Cloudsley had published numerous books and articles in major global scientific magazines in the fields of social theory sociology of culture, anthropology and history of the different indigenous groups in South America.

He also worked for Survival International - an organisation that fights for the rights of indigenous natives - including those of South America.

He is survived by wife Esperanza.
