Ex-Giants safety Curtis Riley signing with Raiders

The New York Giants never appeared interested in bringing safety Curtis Riley back in 2019, but that means little to him now that he’s found a new home.

Riley announced via Twitter on Friday morning that he’s signing with Oakland Raiders.

Although Riley assumed the starting role alongside Landon Collins a year ago — the first time in his career he was a full 16-game starter — it was out of necessity and the team’s lack of depth at the position rather than his actual on-field ability.

Riley led all safeties in missed tackles (24) in 2018, giving him the lowest lowest tackling efficiency (3.9) at the position for those who qualified (400 snaps).

That doesn’t even include the times Riley simply didn’t bother attempting a tackle, including the below gem from the final game of the regular season.

The Giants and their fans are not likely sad to see Riley go, especially due to the additions of veteran Antoine Bethea and youngster Jabrill Peppers.

Good luck to the Raiders. Maybe they can get more out of Riley than general manager Dave Gettleman and head coach Pat Shurmur did.
