Ex-Giants QB Jared Lorenzen in ICU, ‘fighting with everything he has’

On June 28, former New York Giant quarterback Jared Lorenzen was admitted to the hospital with what was originally described as an “infection” and other undisclosed medical issues.

It was learned on Saturday that Lorenzen had actually been put into the intensive care unit, which spoke to the dire nature of his situation.

By Saturday evening, Lorenzen’s family had surrounded him at the hospital and released a statement on his condition via Matt Jones, noting that he’s “fighting with everything he has.”

“On Friday, June 28, Jared began playing a bigger, more important game than he’s ever played before,” the statement said. “Jared had not been feeling well for a few weeks and that finally caught up with him. He was brought to the hospital and fairly quickly was admitted to the ICU. Jared is battling an infection, kidney and heart issues. He is fighting with everything he has and his immediate family is by his side. We will attempt to update as often as possible, but please respect that some aspects of this journey are private matters.”

Lorenzen spent four years with the Giants from 2004-2007, serving as Eli Manning’s backup and earning a championship ring as part of the Super Bowl XLII team.

After his playing career had ended, Lorenzen got up to 502-plus pounds before engaging in a weight loss battle that was documented via the YouTube series, “The Jared Lorenzen Project.” The last video was posted two months ago, at which point Lorenzen had lost 100 pounds.

Lorenzen’s weight loss journey was also the subject of an ESPN E:60 documentary, “The Hefty Lefty.”

The thoughts and prayers of Giants Nation are with Lorenzen and his family.
