Former New York Giants defensive end Robert Ayers is gong into the coaching business. The 34-year-old Ayers, who retired from the NFL last summer after a nine-year career, is taking a job as an assistant coach at Knoxville Catholic High School in Tennessee.
It is sort of homecoming for Ayers, a first-round draft pick of the Denver Broncos (18th overall) in the 2009 NFL Draft, who played at the University of Tennessee from 2005-2008.
As a senior with the Volunteers, Ayers led the SEC with 15.5 tackles for a loss, also posting 49 tackles, three sacks, six quarterback pressures and an interception.
The Jersey City native who moved to South Carolina as a high schooler played five years with the Broncos before signing with the Giants in 2014. He played two years in blue, amassing 14 total sacks. Ayers finished his career in Detroit after two seasons with Tampa Bay.
Ayers recorded 257 total tackles, 35 sacks, 14 pass deflections, eight forced fumbles, three fumble recoveries and one defensive touchdown one his nine years in the NFL.
