Ex-Giant Jerald Ingram joins staff of XFL’s New York franchise

The XFL, owned by WWE’s Vince McMahon, will make its return to the mainstream beginning next year when the previously defunct league is brought back to life with fewer gimmicks and a more sincere focus on the game of football.

One of the league’s head coaches will be Kevin Gilbride, who won two Super Bowl titles with the New York Giants before being essentially forced into retirement following the 2013 season.

Gilbride will take over as general manager and head coach of the New York franchise, which will call MetLife Stadium home during the regular season. And one of his first staff hires is another familiar name to Giants fans — Jerald Ingram.

Ingram was an early hire of Tom Coughlin in 2004, and he would remain with the team working alongside Gilbride until the staff overhaul following the 2013 season.

During his time with the Giants, Ingram helped lead the team to two Super Bowl titles, including a historic upset of the New England Patriots in Super Bowl XLII.

In addition to Gilbride and Ingram, former Giants linebacker Pepper Johnson will join the XFL fray, signing on as defensive coordinator of the Los Angeles franchise.
