Ex-Fulham star Pavel Pogbrebnyak suffering from double pneumonia in coronavirus battle

Former Fulham and Reading striker Pavel Pogrebnyak is seriously ill in hospital after contracting coronavirus.

Pogrebnyak's wife, Maria, posted a message on Instagram revealing the 36-year-old was suffering from double pneumonia and she is also suffering from the virus.

She posted: "The husband is in the hospital, undergoing treatment! Bilateral pneumonia. Today is the third day of the disease!

"My sense of smell has disappeared, I feel absolutely nothing! Awful feeling!"

The Russian centre forward scored 30 goals in 89 starts during his three seasons in English football between 2012-15, including a perfect hat-trick (left foot, right foot, header) for Fulham against Wolves.

By scoring five goals in his first three appearances for Fulham, Pogrebnyak became the fastest player in Premier League history to score five times.

He is currently with Russian Premier League side FC Ural Yekaterinburg.

Pogbrebnyak begun his career with Spartak Moscow and also had spells with Zenit St Petersburg and Stuttgart before moving to Fulham in January 2012.

He left Craven Cottage after just six months, penning a four-year, £65,000-a-week contract with Reading.

The forward couldn't keep the Royals in the Premier League, however, scoring five top-flight goals as they dropped into the Championship.

He would stay at the Madejski Stadium for another two years before leaving for Dynao Moscow in the summer of 2015.
