Ex-Fulham midfielder gives damning verdict after relegation & outlines what the club must do now

Fulham need to appoint Scott Parker as manager for next season in the Championship.

That's the verdict of former Fulham midfielder Steve Sidwell, who has given his opinion on how his old club have fared this season and what they must now do, after the Cottagers' fate was sealed after a 4-1 defeat against Watford last night (Tuesday).

And Sidwell reckons there have been some key factors behind Fulham's troubles this season, with the pundit calling for some consistency and a chance for Parker, who has now overseen five straight defeats since taking over as interim manager following the sacking of Claudio Ranieri at the end of February.

"They were one of the best football teams in the Championship, but this year, defensively, it's been a shambles," he said, speaking on BBC Radio 5 Live.

Fulham hero gives transfer update on Tom Cairney, Aleksandar Mitrović and Ryan Sessegnon

"Signing 12 players would have been demoralising for the existing players. The squad needed strengthening but not to that extent.

"They did not name a consecutive back four in the first ten games and as a result they have been all over the place.

"The players who got them into the Premier League deserved a crack at it, but they did not get the chance.

Shahid Khan has a message for the Fulham fans after relegation was confirmed by Watford defeat

"They need to give the job to Scott Parker because he knows the core values of the club, he understands the Championship and the fans want him to get it."
