Ex-footballer who assaulted waiter at The Social in Glasgow jailed for 14 months

A former Scots junior footballer who threw a bottle of beer at a waiter in a pub has been jailed for 14 months.

Ryan McCormack, 30, struck a 21-year-old waiter, with the empty Peroni at The Social in Glasgow city centre on August 23 this year.

Ex-Glasgow Perthshire star had earlier shouted and swore at a waitress and threatened to murder customers.

After his arrest, McCormack went on to tell officers that the Taliban would kill them.

McCormack pled guilty yesterday at Glasgow Sheriff Court to assaulting the victim.

He also admitted to behaving in a threatening or abusive manner.

The court heard McCormack was in the city centre before 8pm shouting at members of the public and throwing punches into the air.

McCormack picked up a stool from the outside seating area at The Social in the area's Royal Exchange Square.

He was asked to put it down by a 20-year-old female waitress who was told that he would "batter you if you were a man."

McCormack then continued to shout at customers before being asked to leave due to his aggressive behaviour.

He then said: "F*** off, I will f***ing murder yous."

Prosecutor John Bedford added: "He picked up an empty bottle of Peroni and threw it at a crowd situated at the bar.

"This struck a man - who was working as a waiter - on the head."

He later attended hospital after suffering from dizziness.

McCormack was later traced by police and he was arrested before stating: "The Taliban will kill you all."

Keith Tuck, defending, told the court that the dad-of-one had been drinking following an argument with his partner.

The lawyer added: "He is an intelligent young man and understands and accepts his own conduct and regrets it.

"In his younger days, he was a footballer at quite a good level."

McCormack's previous convictions include weapons and road traffic offences.

Sheriff Lindsay Wood told him: "People would be concerned by this as they are out enjoying themselves and you are chucking bottles saying all sorts of things to the police. It makes no sense."

"The Taliban will kill you all, what do you mean by that?"

McCormack replied: "I can't remember saying it."
