Ex-FIFA ref wades into Nottingham Forest penalty controversy after Grant McCann comments

Nottingham Forest were fortunate to win a penalty against Hull City, according to ex-Fifa referee Keith Hackett.

The Reds won the Championship clash 2-1 at the City Ground at the weekend as Steve Cooper's side ended the Tigers' six-game unbeaten run.

Forest were awarded a penalty when George Honeyman and Alex Mighten tangled in the box leading to the referee to give the Reds a spot-kick which Lewis Grabban converted.

Hull were leading 1-0 at the time and it led to a furious Tigers boss Grant McCann blasting the decision as a "howler".

And now ex-Premier League referee Hackett, who was speaking to Football Insider, said the Hull manager had every right to feel aggrieved.

" I don’t think this was a penalty kick,” Hackett said.

“I thought it was the Nottingham Forest player who had fouled the Hull City player. It was the wrong decision.

“The referee is in a great position, he’s looking right at it.

“It’s not a penalty kick for me. The Hull manager has got every justification in his post-match comments.

“You can be really close to play [as a referee] and you get something different. These are easier calls to make once you’ve looked at the video.”
