The Ex-fiancée of a Glasgow woman fighting for life after being 'stabbed in the neck' at Magaluf nightclub after a horror assault in Magaluf broke down in tears after hearing of the attack.

Bethany Bancroft, 23, was engaged to Glasgow-born Sarah Ann Garrity, 22, until recently.

As Sarah remains critically ill in hospital after being First photo of female soldier accused of cutting Glasgow woman's throat at Magaluf nightclub, Bethany’s mum Barbara Nield has revealed that her daughter, who is currently serving in Kenya, called her in a distressed state when she heard the news.

The 62-year-old from Fleetwood, Lancashire, told The Daily Record: “She was crying her eyes out. She was so upset because of what had happened to Sarah.

She was rushed to the intensive care unit at Son Espases Hospital in the island’s capital, Palma.

Medics confirmed Sarah was in a critical condition due to how much blood she lost in the attack.

Her friend and fellow servicewoman Sydney Cole, 19, was arrested at the scene on suspicion of carrying out the attack and appeared in a Spanish court yesterday afternoon.

The pair are believed to have been on holiday together and Sarah had been sharing photos of her and Sydney together as recently as a few weeks ago.

Ex-fiancée Bethany's brother also revealed she is waiting for an update on Sarah's condition as he described her as 'bright, witty, funny and caring'.

He said” “Bethany is really shocked. They were engaged but broke up on good terms.

“They were both serving in the Army, so they were often away on postings. But they came here to see us regularly. They were always together when they were at home. Sarah is a really nice girl.

“Bethany wanted to know if there was anything she could do but there were no flights to get back.

“She is waiting for a phone call from Sarah’s mum for an update.

“It is such a terrible thing to happen, especially on holiday.”

Sarah, who serves in the Royal Logistic Corps, moved to Middlesbrough from Ayrshire after joining the Army.

Her family, who live in Irvine, were not available for comment yesterday.

It’s thought they were making their way to Spain to be at Sarah’s side.

Spanish police have yet to confirm whether the attack involved a bottle or a piece of broken glass.

A source said: “The girl who was injured suffered a cut to her throat. She was rushed to intensive care and had an emergency operation.

“She’s still very serious but we’re hearing the operation had been successful and saved her life.”

A representative from Son Espanses Hospital confirmed Sarah was in intensive care.

A source at the hospital said: “We received the first calls at 12.55am about a fight in a nightclub between two female friends.

“The alert that came in said the incident involved a physical attack with a glass by one friend against another.”

Cole, a clerk with the Adjutant General’s Corps, appeared in court in Palma yesterday afternoon.
