Ex-Emmerdale star Shila Iqbal tells This Morning her racist and homophobic tweets were 'banter'

Former Emmerdale actress Shila Iqbal says the offensive tweets which cost her her job were "banter".

She told This Morning's Holly Willoughby and Phillip Schofield she was treated unfairly.

The 24-year-old appeared on the ITV daytime show to talk about the old racist and homophobic tweets that surfaced online.

Shila, who played Aiesha Richards on the soap , told the presenters how she had been kept on as a permanent cast member, but then she was called in to speak to the producers.

She said: "I got pulled in by the producers and I was shown the tweets, I was shocked because I don't use language like that anymore.

"I was called back in and told that my contract would not be renewed.

"I just felt like I was dreaming, I don't use those words anymore."

The tweets were unearthed earlier this month and saw Shila appearing to use the N-word and gay slurs in an exchange with friends, the Liverpool Echo reports.

One of the tweets sent from her account read: "Do not tweet me you gay" while another stated: "I know too many noisy n****s".

Phil questioned why she had used this type of language, she said: "It was banter in a way, influenced by the type of music.

"I didn't think about the implications and the hurt that these words can cause."

She went on to say how she felt she had been judged harshly for tweets to her friends when she was a teenager.

She added: "If the person has changed and shown remorse, they should not be judged.

"I honestly think it is a tricky one, ITV have a moral obligation to do what's right by the public, and I respect their decision.

"The fact that they have taken a stand and we do not tolerate that language in society, and that's what the message we are sending out, that we shouldn't tolerate this language.

"But I question is it fair that I am being judged on something I did as a teenager and if we do look at the context and the intentions, there was no negative intention behind there, I wasn't hurling abuse at anyone, I made a mistake. "

She said she fears for her acting future, but vowed to try and move one, saying "only time will tell".

But many viewers didn't agree, one said: "Cannot believe #thismorning is defending that Shila Iqbal. She blamed the hiphop culture for the racist and homophobic tweets she sent at the grown age of 19!"

Another added: "Sorry, young people bought up with social media should know that what you write has the potential to come back and bite you on the bum.

"So how about you think before you write. Be more mindful."

This Morning is on ITV1, weekdays from 10.30am.
