Ex-Eastenders actor Cliff Parisi joins I'm A Celebrity - and says it's because of 'the taxman'

Actor Cliff Parisi is set to join I'm A Celebrity...Get Me Out Of Here as two new campmates enter the jungle.

The ex-Eastenders star will head for the Australian Outback during Wednesday night's show on ITV alongside Coronation Street's Andrew Whyment.

Cliff, who will be known to many as Minty from the BBC soap, has spoken about his reasons for joining the popular reality series before his jungle stint.

In a chat with the Mirror , the 59-year-old has said that he has signed up to I'm A Celeb because he needs the money.

"What made me sign up? The taxman. I have got a bill I need to pay," Cliff admitted.

"Like everyone at this time of year, you go, 'Oh no. Again...' You would think I earn a lot of money but I don't.

"I work for the BBC, so it ain't that big."

Cliff also said that he initially turned down the telly gig before being hit with a tax bill.

"I had a meeting about this earlier on in the year, and I thought about it long and hard and said no," the actor explained.

"And then as I got an estimate for my tax, I phoned them up and said, is it too late to say yes?

Since leaving Walford Cliff has starred in Call The Midwife (TV Grab)

"So here I am. But it could be an amazing experience and I hope it is.

"Life throws up things like this for you, and if you don't take them you are a bit of a mug.

"So I give myself a bit of a talking to, and then I spoke to the accountant and he made my mind up.

"What is the worse-case scenario? A big snake is gonna bite you or the taxman is gonna bite you. Which do you want?"

Cliff left Eastenders in 2010 after joining as mechanic Minty Peterson in 2002.

Since leaving Walford behind, he has since gone on to star in BBC drama Call The Midwife as handyman Fred Buckle.

Cliff will join the likes of Caitlyn Jenner, Kate Garraway, Ian Wright and Roman Kemp who have spent the last few days settling in to jungle life.

I'm A Celebrity continues at 9pm on ITV.
