Ex-Dunfermline skipper Paul Paton opens up on part-time switch amid East Kilbride talks

Midfielder Paul Paton has revealed he is in talks over a shock switch to East Kilbride.

The Northern Ireland cap, who was captain at Dunfermline last season in the Championship, is on the look out for a part-time club after leaving the Pars at the end of last term.

The 33-year-old, who has also turned out for Dundee United, Partick Thistle and St Johnstone admits he is considering a move to the Lowland League after being impressed by K-Park gaffer Stevie Aitken.

“I have been speaking to Stevie for a couple of weeks now,” Paton told Lanarkshire Live Sport.

“Obviously East Kilbride are really ambitious, they are trying to sign a good few players, and they have the planning permission for the stadium, so it’s something I’ve been weighing up.

“I’ve got three or four part-time clubs who have made me offers.

“For me, it has to be somewhere near me if I’m going part-time, I can’t be travelling hours after work so there is only really five or six clubs I would be willing to go to.

“I feel like I have a lot to offer and could be at a top Championship club at worst.

"There are only a couple of Championship clubs I could go to; I’ve been to a couple of them and been at Dundee United so it’s not as if I can go to Dundee.

“You start looking down the leagues and think if I can get a part-time team that I’m happy with and a job I’ll make peace with that decision.”

He added: “One thing that has really impressed me at EK is Stevie; I can tell just from talking to him that he’s a good guy and he’s ambitious.

“At one point he was one of the best young managers in the country when he was at Dumbarton; I’m surprised he didn’t move on from there.

“He’s got something to prove as well as East Kilbride.

“They’ve been under performing a bit and they will have to sort that. We’ve not sorted anything yet, so whether or not I’m there to help will be about sorting a deal I’m happy with.”

Kilby boss Aitken said: “Paul is the level of player that I want to try and find.

“He has a lot of options, and hopefully East Kilbride is one of the ones he’s looking at.”
