Oct. 29--A former Crystal Lake Babe Ruth Baseball coach who had served little more than a year in prison after pleading guilty in 2014 to possession of child pornography is facing new charges.
Marcus Sabo, 43, formerly of Crystal Lake, is charged with misdemeanor sexual predator in a public park and two counts of felony failure to register as a sex offender, according to documents filed in McHenry County court.
As a registered sex offender, Sabo is required to report his address or report as a transient to local police.
McHenry County Judge Sharon Prather on Wednesday granted a limited personal-recognizance bond allowing Sabo to return to Wayside Cross Ministries shelter in Aurora pending his court case.
Assistant State's Attorney John Gibbons objected to Sabo being allowed to return to Wayside. Prather warned Sabo that if he leaves the facility he'd be returned to county jail.
Sabo was arrested in September at Wayside on a warrant stemming from an incident in February. He was found sleeping on a park bench in Veteran Acres Park in Crystal Lake on Feb. 22, two days after his release from prison, according to authorities.
It is unclear why, but authorities at that time took Sabo to a hospital instead of to jail. He was not taken into custody until police found him at Wayside in September.
In 2014, Sabo pleaded guilty to possessing several images of child pornography and was sentenced to two years in prison.
During the sentencing, authorities testified that investigators found 18 printed pages of child pornography featuring young boys, downloaded from the Internet, in a shoe box in a side drawer in Sabo's bedroom.
Authorities also found hundreds of additional images of child pornography on his personal computer and questionable but not "sexually explicit" images of youth baseball players from the Babe Ruth League organization.
Sabo's next court date is set for Dec. 2.
