A former Songkhla province police sergeant has been arrested for attempted murder.

The victim was shot in a hut at a longan plantation in Rattaphum district on Sunday night.

Police said two men went to the hut in Moo 6 village in tambon Khao Phra about 9am on Sunday. There, one of them shot Prathana Chanthok, 51.

The man was hit once in the neck and seriously injured. He was admitted to Hat Yai Hospital.

With information from the victim's daughter and son-in-law, police acquired warrants for the arrest of two suspects -- Surapong Klabkaew, 35, and Sathaporn Chanmee.

Mr Surapong was arrested on Tuesday at a house in Moo 6 village in tambon Khlong Khut in Muang district of Satun province.

Under questioning, Mr Surapong allegedly admitted to shooting Mr Prathana. He said he left a gun in Mr Prathana's care. Mr Prathana later sold it and refused to give him any money.

Mr Surapong is a former policeman. He joined the force in 2013 and was assigned to Si Sakhon district, Narathiwat. He was later transferred to a police paratrooper unit in Prachuap Khiri Khan province before resigning from the police service. His last rank was police sergeant.

He is on record as being reclusive and a collector of military-grade weapons.
