Ex-con on parole shoots NYPD lieutenant 12 hours after wounding an officer

NEW YORK _ An ex-con out on parole and seemingly hellbent on killing a cop burst into a Bronx stationhouse Sunday morning and shot an NYPD lieutenant just 12 hours after wounding another officer two blocks away, authorities said.

The shooter burst into the stationhouse on Longwood Avenue just before 8 a.m. and blasted the lieutenant in the arm, the video shows.

Police sources identified the gunman as Robert Williams, who was released on parole in 2017 for an attempted murder conviction.

Unsuspecting officers were getting the day started when the gunman walked into the stationhouse, video shows.

One officer is seen casually glancing at the gunman and going back to normal business before hearing a shot ring out and ducking for cover.

A shootout ensued and the suspect is seen slamming to the ground, his gun skidding all the way across the stationhouse floor.

Over a dozen cops jump on the gunman, with at least one throwing repeated punches at the shooter. Meanwhile the lieutenant, wearing a blood soaked white shirt, is seen staggering near where he was shot.

The wounded officer was rushed to Lincoln Hospital and is in stable condition, according to police.

"This was an attempt to assassinate police officers. We need to use that word. Because it was a premeditated effort to kill," Mayor Bill de Blasio at a press conference Sunday. "Thank God our officers are alive, and thank God that our officers are the caliber of people that they are to handle a situation like this."

A man who lives across the street from the precinct saw cops escorting the wounded lieutenant out of the building.

"They were holding onto him as he limped," said the man in Spanish. "He was holding his side."

"It was incredible," he added. "I've never seen so many cops come out so fast."

The shooting came during an intense manhunt after a uniformed cop was shot and wounded at 8:30 p.m. Saturday.

The shooter walked up to a police van on Simpson Street near E. 163rd Street where the officer was sitting having a conversation and opened fire.

One or two bullets struck the officer in the neck and chin, cops said.

The bullet or bullets narrowly missed the officer's carotid artery, Police Commissioner Dermont Shea said in a press conference Saturday night. "It is a miracle we are not here under worse circumstances," he said.

"Both officers are doing well and we expect them to make a full recovery," Chief Surgeon Eli Kleinman said at a press conference at Lincoln Hospital Sunday.

The two shootings happened within 12 hours of each other and police are confident the shooter in custody is responsible for both.

"It is a double miracle that we are not preparing for two funerals right now," said Patrick Lynch, president of the Police Benevolent Association. "These targeted attacks are exactly what we have warned against, again and again."
