Mona Eltahawy, who wrote a column in the London-based Arab newspaper Asharq al-Awsat, claims she has been banned. Likening her dealings with the Saudi-owned paper to "playing hopscotch in a minefield", she says that being dropped happened graduallly. Fewer and fewer of her columns were published until, without explanation, they stopped appearing altogether. "The trouble with Asharq al-Awsat, beyond its disturbing acquiescence to Arab regimes", she writes, "is that it claimed a liberalism that was patently false." (Via International Herald Tribune)
