Ex-cleaner says over-60s flats are so dirty it would cause prison riot

A retired cleaner has slammed her supported housing in Henleaze as “absolutely filthy”.

Anita Langdon says the communal parts of Studland Court, a block of 37 flats for over-60s, have become “disgusting” over the last six months.

The 64-year-old former Southmead Fire Station cleaner said: “If they had conditions like this in HMP Bristol there would be a riot.”

Ms Langdon claims the Bristol City Council-run supported housing on Henleaze Road is cleaned for 10 minutes a week at most.

She said: “They used to do a good job until six months ago, when everything changed.

“Now the place is absolutely filthy. I can’t describe how bad it is.

“If I had seen what it would come to look like when I first came here three years ago, I would never have stepped foot on the doormat.”

'Horrible'

Much of Ms Langdon’s anger is over the community room, which she says has a “horrible smell”.

She said: “I used to go in there and talk to my neighbours, but no more.

“The tables are rotting. There are black bits all over the floor.

“You could use your finger to write on the record player 20 times, there is so much dust on it. I’ve been suffering from asthma.”

The retiree branded the communal bathroom as “filthy” and the laundry room “grimy”.

Speaking about the carpet near the main entrance, she said: “I have never seen anything like it. It is so black with dirt.

“There is tape holding down the carpet which has been there three months.

“When I’ve complained to the council, they have told me I am the only one who has complained, but my neighbours have told me they have complained too.”

'You could eat off the floor'

Ms Langdon claims the level of cleanliness at Studland Court is in stark contrast to what Southmead Fire Station was like when she was a cleaner there.

She said: “Oh, I used to keep that place clean alright. You could eat off the floor.”

Ms Langdon’s remark about HMP Bristol comes after June inspections of the Horfield prison revealed its “squalid living conditions”.

Then-Prisons Minister Robert Buckland acknowledged at the time that the prison faced "serious challenges", saying his department has been providing extra support.

The council has been approached for comment on Ms Langdon’s complaint.
