A former member of an Airdrie church has been convicted of sexual offences against four young men spanning more than 40 years.
John Grant, 77, was found guilty at Wood Green Crown Court of three counts of sexual assault, six counts of indecent assault and two counts of causing another person to engage in non-penetrative sexual activity.
The offences involved four victims and took place between 1970 and 2012, according to the Metropolitan Police.
Grant, who is now living in north London, was a member of Broomknoll Church of Scotland between 1965 and 1970 before going on to hold senior roles in churches and youth groups across the UK.
Detectives said Grant was also linked to churches including Muswell Hill Baptist Church in north London and Billingham Baptist Church in Stockton-on-Tees, as well as several youth organisations.
Police believe there may be more victims and have appealed for anyone with information about Grant’s activities to come forward.
Detective Constable Liam Levy, who led the investigation, said the case involved “deeply distressing” non-recent sexual offences and praised the courage of the victim-survivors who came forward.
He said: “The victim-survivors were vulnerable young men who put their trust in Grant through his church association, and it is devastating they could be taken advantage of in this way.”
The investigation began in 2023 after a victim reported being sexually assaulted over almost two decades, starting in 1994 when he moved into a shared house with Grant.
Following that report, detectives examined Grant’s involvement with churches and youth groups and identified further victims.
During his time at Muswell Hill Baptist Church, Grant also served as a moderator for the London Baptist Association, allowing him to visit and work with other churches in the area.
Anyone with information can call 101 quoting reference CAD3277/08JUL26. Anonymous reports can be made through Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111.
Grant is due to be sentenced at Wood Green Crown Court on Friday, September 11.
