Ex-Chelsea man's hilariously brutal put down to Unai Emery and his first season at Arsenal

Eidur Gudjohnsen has laughed off suggestions that Unai Emery has had a good campaign in his first season as Arsenal head coach.

The former Chelsea striker was a guest pundit on BT Sport ahead of the Europa League final that pitted the Gunners against the Blues in Baku.

When asked about how the Spaniard had fared since taking over from Arsene Wenger last season, he offered a frank assessment of his work so far.

"Let’s be brutally honest about this," he said. "If Arsenal don’t win tonight it’s an average season."

Ex-Arsenal defender Martin Keown tried to defend Emery for his efforts at the Emirates Stadium this season.

"Without doubt," said the retired centre-back. "But he has the chance it’s in his hands tonight.

"If you look at what Arsene Wenger did in 22 years he didn’t win a European trophy. He might be pointing to me and a miss I made in the UEFA Cup, but they didn’t win one.

"He’s a serial winner in this competition so let’s trust in Emery to pull it off, win a trophy, and Arsenal get catapulted into the big time."

However, even Keown agreed that regardless of what Emey has achieved this season, it has not been enough given the gains made by others.

"Arsenal are falling behind right now," he added. "As we see what Manchester City are dong. Liverpool and Tottenham in the Champions League final.

"It’s a huge gulf between the top two and the rest."
