Ex-Chelsea boss names the former Arsenal ace who epitomised 'everything you like about football'

Ruud Gullit has described former Arsenal forward Dennis Bergkamp as the top striker in the Premier League era, when it comes to elegance.

The Dutchman spent 11 years in north London with the Gunners , scoring 120 goals in 423 appearances in all competitions, including 87 goals in the Premier League.

He also registered 94 assists in the English top flight in 315 appearances, while he helped the Gunners to three Premier League titles and won four player of the month awards.

Why Arsene Wenger being named the 32nd best manager of all time is a 'load of nonsense'

And former Chelsea and Newcastle boss Gullit was waxing lyrical about his compatriot in a debate about who was the greatest overseas player in the Premier League era.

"Dennis [Bergkamp] was everything you like about football," said Gullit, speaking on the BBC programme, The Premier League Show.

"The elegance of football, he had it in him. He could do things that nobody could, and he scored goals that nobody could.

Arsenal Invincible makes big claim about Mesut Ozil and how Unai Emery can get the best from him

"For elegance, for sure, he is the top of everybody."

However, Bergkamp was not voted as the top striker in the Premier League era among the panel of four, which also included former Newcastle United striker Alan Shearer, ex-Blackburn Rovers striker Chris Sutton and journalist Rory Smith, from the New York Times.

Instead, they named Bergkamp's former Arsenal team-mate Thierry Henry as the greatest striker in the Premier League era.
