Frank Lampard has revealed that he initially struggled with how to react to Chelsea’s Champions League win last season.
Lampard was dismissed as the Blues’ manager in January after a poor run of results and was replaced by Thomas Tuchel, who went on to lift the trophy in May.
The Chelsea legend steered his old side to the last-16 of the competition and played a key role in helping the club’s young players such as Reece James and Mason Mount develop.
However, despite the impact he had before his dismissal, Lampard was reluctant to take any credit for the club's 1-0 victory over Manchester City in the final.
Speaking to Gary Neville’s the Overlap YouTube series, Lampard admitted he grappled with a range of emotions after the historic win.
“On a football level I can say part of that is me, Mason Mount and Reece James played brilliantly in the final," he said.
“The goal goes from Mendy to Chilwell, to Mount, to Havertz and I’m going, 'that’s a bit of me there'.
“But the other side of me goes, 'I’m not taking any ownership over that'.
“I got quite a few messages after that saying ‘that's your team’ and I’m like 'no it’s not'. Because that’s how I am.
“Fairplay to Tuchel and the club, I’ll never take ownership of that.
“I found it tough watching that game, I had so many Chelsea fans come up to me and say ‘you were part of that’ but when I got over that feeling I felt a sense of it has been my club for a long time and always will be and I should be happy with that in a way.”
