Ex-chef explains how to make McDonald's breakfast at home - for half the price

A thrifty mum has revealed how she made her own McDonald's classic breakfast for four people - for less than £8.

Ex-chef Mel Philips-Peters, 27, managed to make four sausage, bacon and cheese muffins, two hash browns and orange juice at home in 10 minutes.

She paid only £7.45 for all the ingredients and with another pack of cheese muffins, it would be enough to sort out morning meals for the whole week.

The exact same breakfast meals at McDonald's would have cost her about £16.

Stay-at-home mum Mrs Philips-Peters, shared her money-savvy tips on a Facebook group called Extreme Couponing and Bargains UK, where the post received over 500 likes and dozen of comments.

She told The Sun: "We fancied McDonald's breakfast but find it's never filling and can be costly if you want two meals each...so we decided to do our own."

She suggested her husband, 27, a civil servant, that they should by a pack of hash browns for £1 and 'do our own Maccies, save a lot of money and still have leftovers'.

The DIY McDonald's included flattened pork meatballs to get both the taste and texture of the fast food chain's iconic sausage patties.

Mrs Philips-Peters claimed her Morrisons-version breakfast is also a healthier option - almost 100 calories less than the McDonald's breakfast deal.

And it seems other mums have made their makeshift McDonald's breakfast as they shared their thrifty ideas in the comments.

Paula Atkinso' said: "Every Sunday in my house, egg AkMuffin with has browns."

'Emily Schofield' shared her tips: "I've been doing this for years...if you break an egg into a cup and put in the microwave for a few seconds it comes out round for the muffins like theirs as well."

One suggested: "Asda do sausage patties for £2.30 for 6."
