Ex-Chargers WR Reche Caldwell killed during robbery attempt

Former Chargers wide receiver Reche Caldwell has died after being shot in Tampa, FL during an attempted robbery, his mother told TMZ. ESPN’s Adam Schefter confirmed the report.

Caldwell, 41, was on a date Saturday night with his girlfriend. He was “ambushed” by multiple people attempting to rob him. He was reportedly shot in the leg and chest and died on the way to the hospital.

Caldwell was a second-round pick of the 2002 NFL Draft, where he played for the Chargers for four seasons. In his time wearing the blue and gold, the former Florida product totaled 76 receptions for 950 yards and seven touchdowns.

Caldwell went on to play for the Patriots, leading the team in 2006 with 61 catches and 760 receiving yards. He then signed with the Redskins the season after. Caldwell called it quits after a short stint with the Rams in 2008.

His brother, Andre Caldwell, spent eight years in the NFL and won a Super Bowl with the Broncos.
