Ex-Charger Eric Weddle released by Ravens

In what can be described as coming out of left field, the Ravens have released former Charger and six-time Pro Bowl safety Eric Weddle Tuesday, according to NFL Media’s Ian Rapoport.

Since signing on with Baltimore back in 2016, Weddle earned three Pro Bowl appearances in as many seasons. The 34-year old free safety continues to play at a high level, so the move was a bit shocking to say the least.

A fan favorite among many, Weddle was appreciated during his time with the Bolts. But it quickly fell apart when he was mistreated by the franchise after the final season on his contract.

Weddle was fined $10,000 by the team for staying on the field during halftime to watch his daughter perform. The final straw was when former coach Mike McCoy asked him which team he was going to play for while sitting in a hot tub with quarterback Philip Rivers.

Weddle still keeps in touch with Rivers quite a bit. To this day, his presence motivated some of the players that are still on the roster, and the mark that he left still touches his biggest fans.

The Fontana native now joins a deep group of safety free agents this offseason that include LaMarcus Joyner, Landon Collins, Earl Thomas, Tyrann Mathieu, Glover Quin and Johnathan Cyprien.
