Ex-Challenge Cup winner believes British Isles competition revamp is positive

Airdrie Challenge Cup winner Marc Smyth believes that the decision to introduce teams from across the British Isles to the competition is a positive thing for players – if the punters buy into the competition.

In recent seasons Scottish top flight Colt teams, along with Irish, Northern Irish, Welsh and English conference sides have been invited to play in the competition.

Last season, Airdrie were knocked out of the competition by Sutton from England’s non-league, and Welsh minnows Connah’s Quay Nomads made it to the final.

Smyth reckons there are some benefits. He said: “For me this set-up could only be a good thing. Players get to play teams who they wouldn’t normally face week in, week out.

"It also means they get a trip to a country they have probably never played in before, for both the Scottish sides and the other teams.

“It’s also that bit more competitive for the players from Ireland, because a lot of them will be part-time and it gives them a chance to put themselves in the shop window in Scotland.”

He added: “I would say this all really depends on the crowds though and how well they respond to the changes.

“If clubs aren’t bringing good crowds in then it will change again I’m sure.”
